The Quran was revealed in Ramadan. According to the Quran, it was night when the Quran first began to be revealed. Gabriel came towards the end of the month of Ramadan. This night is called Lailatul Qadr: ِنَّا أَنْزَلْنَاهُ فِي لَيْلَةِ الْقَدْرِ،  وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ، لَيْلَةُ الْقَدْرِ خَيْرٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ شَهْرٍ (97:1-3)

Lailatul Qadr is extremely important. It is better than a thousand nights. Towards the end of Ramadan, people seek Lailatul Qadr. Hazrat Ayesha asked the Prophet: If I find myself in the Night of Destiny, what should I do? The Prophet replied: اللهم إنك عفو تحب العفو فاعف عني (Sunan Ibn Majah 3850)

What did the Prophet mean by this? These are not mere words. Mere repetition of these words will not do anything. This prayer tells us what we should most earnestly desire in the Night of Destiny.  If you pray for children, high buildings, wealth or business, then Shab-e-Qadr is not meant for this.  Shab-e-Qadr is meant to seek God's forgiveness. O God, You are forgiving, You love forgiveness, so forgive me! This is the greatest thing to ask God for. Through this prayer, the Prophet taught us what we should ask from God.
