The Quran speaks about zakat in Surah al-Tawbah. There are eight categories for zakat, two of which are for conveying God's message. Spending zakat money for dawah ilallah, which means to convey the message of Islam to non-Muslims. There are two categories for this mentioned in Surah al-Tawbah. I have written about it in detail. 
Dawah is a category for which zakat should be contributed. In this age, a great way of dawah is to distribute the Quran. At present, throughout the world people want to know about Islam. Muslims have indulged in militancy and violence around the world. A consequence of this is that Islam has come into the news. Today Islam is in the news around the world. Muslims are creating a furore over the disrespect shown to the Quran. These are negative activities of Muslims. But a positive benefit is that Islam has appeared in the news. People want to know what Islam is and what the Quran is. Wherever our companions are distributing the Quran, people receive it happily. A lady called me from Canada. She listens to our lectures and reads our books. She developed the desire to distribute the Quran. She discussed it with a friend. The friend replied: Will you give the Quran to people who drink and who would disrespect it? But the lady ignored this remark and began to distribute the Quran. She shared that wherever she goes, people take the Quran respectfully. They even say they would surely read the Quran. People are, as if, waiting for someone to come to give the Quran to them. It is required that the Quran be translated into English and major world languages. These translations should then be distributed widely. This is the best way to spend your zakat money. There are 1 billion Muslims in the world, while the total world population is 7 billion. This means that 6 billion people are unaware of the Quran. Every person has to die, both Muslims and other people. 
What will happen to them on the Day of Judgment? The Quran says: Copy arabic text (7:6) Then shall We question those to whom Our message was sent and those through whom We sent it. People will be asked whether the Quran reached them. Believers will be asked if they conveyed the Quran to people. 
What will happen on that day? Will Muslims be allowed to go by saying that they were spending money on their family?
People must spend their money for Quran distribution. The best way of spending your zakat money is to give it for Quran distribution. At CPS, we have a separate fund for this purpose. I would urge people to give their zakat money to CPS. CPS takes meticulous care of how this zakat money is spent. Give your zakat money to CPS, and CPS will devote it to Quran distribution worldwide. Dawah ilallah is a very important category of zakat. In this age, people are unware of Islam. The image of Islam has been distorted. People think that Islam is a religion of violence. The image of Islam has been distorted. People think Islam is about violence and hatred. In this situation, it is our great responsibility to convey the true message of Islam to people. The Quran is a means to true knowledge of Islam. You can give other literature as well. Our companions give out the Quran and the book The Prophet of Peace. This is a task of utmost importance today. Spending zakat money for this cause is not only permissible, it is the most important category of zakat. I will urge you all to give importance to this task. Religion has the first right over your money and then comes the turn of your family. Your family is ranked no. 2, while religion is ranked no. 1. You should spend zakat money for religion. You can also spend money other than zakat for the religious cause, so that this task can be performed on a large scale. It is essential to translate and convey the Quran in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and other major languages. People have translated the Quran without clarity. It is difficult to understand. We need a translation which is understandable. By God's grace, the translation that has been printed at CPS is understandable. People couldn’t understand other translations. But the one available at CPS is simple and clear. Many have said that it now seems that the Quran is an understandable book. We used to think that the Quran cannot be understood. This is a very important task. We need to give it utmost emphasis. There is no doubt about it.
